De La Salle fought out an impressive victory over St Bernards on Saturday but missed out on VAFA Premierfinals action whenother results went against them.
Needing to keep winning and hope the top four stumbled, Old Scotch’s win over Collegians was enough to confirm the finalists for this year, with De La’s late-season rally all to no avail.
After a convincing win over Collegians last week, De La Salle continued the good form against St Bernards, shooting awayto an early lead before running out the second half stronger on their way to a 12.15 (87) to 10.6 (66) win at Waverley Park.
All the VAFA Premier results
The home side could have had the match all but sewn up by the first break, with 12 scoring shots to two for the term.
But theykicked just three goals — and sprayed two out on the full — andwent into quarter-timewith only a four-goal buffer.
St Bernards have challenged all the Premier clubs this season, and their second quarter showed why.
They allowed De La just one goal form the termas they stormed back to snatch the lead just before half-time break.
De La had topped the ladder for much of the early part of the season, and they showed the form that took them there in the second half with a withering burst of attacking football that ultimately proved the difference between the two sides.
Jake Williams was again superb through the middle of the ground, while Sam Pickett was lively up forward as he picked up three goals.
De La led by 20 points at the final break, and although St Bernards were again competitive in the last quarter they couldn’t close the gap on their opponents as the home side took the win and continued their great late season form.
With back-to-back wins over quality sides, and the wooden spooners Old Carey to come in this week’s final round, there would be plenty of finals-bound teams glad that De la won’t be featuring in September.
