Tourism boost vital for region

TOURISM is worth millions to the North East and the variety of events here continues to grow.

Full credit to the Victorian government for putting financial impetus behind some of them.

Festivals focusing on wine, jazz, culinary delights and the region’s heritage are a few of the annual attractions drawing huge numbers of visitors.

In recent times, the government has announced funding for the Kangaroo Hoppet at Falls Creek which now has international recognition.

The latest funding of $60,000 is for an innovative event called the Cycle Salute.

It will showcase this region’s many and varied features to the rest of Australia.

The more adventurous can compete in mountain bike or road events while there are more leisurely winery and restaurant tours along with categories for families.

More than 50 varied cycling events are planned for several towns and their surrounds over 16 days from October 18.

It is expected to attract 3400 participants with the figure ballooning to more than 5000 with family and support staff.

Such an influx of visitors will be a huge additional financial boon for our region.
