Boomers Emily Bouwhuis holds off Albury City’s Emma Rogers in their play-off for the league title yesterday. Boomers won 1-0. Picture: BEN EYLESBOOMERS have won the women’s league title with a nail-biting 1-0 win against Albury City.
Great saves at either end of the park from City’s Brogan Broadway when the scores were locked at 0-0 and Jess Noordewier for Boomers from a cracking shot that would have again levelled the scores were game highlights.
In the end, a corner late in the second half and goal mouth scramble sealed the title.
Boomers captain Leah Wilesmith said there was relief but now they would refocus on the cup.
“We play hard every week and don’t want to see that as our grand final but there is some relief with the result,” she said.
Coach Steve Hayes said it was a big game for a big occasion.
“To have the season coming down to the last game of the year and have such a great crowd here was terrific and the standard of the game was befitting the contest,” he said.
City coach Peter Hovar said it wasn’t their day but believes his side can beat Boomers in the cup play-offs.
“We are carrying some injuries but those girls are getting better and I’ll think if we get there in three weeks we will be a much better side, fitness wise and having learnt from what we did out there today,” he said.
